What to Know About the Types of CBD.
Happy National CBD Day, all! August 8 is a day dedicated to one of our favorite powerhouse ingredients, Cannabidiol. Never heard of CBD Day before? That’s because it’s a relatively new holiday, with its first celebration back in 2018, which started to raise awareness about CBD’s benefits. In the past, there was a lot of confusion about CBD and its relation to marijuana. Just because CBD is derived from the hemp plant, doesn’t mean it gets you high. It increases blood flow, promotes relaxation, and is known to ease pain and anxiety. But not all types of CBD are the same. We put together a quick guide to help you better understand the differences between full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate CBD, and help you make more informed decisions as you shop.
How Is CBD Oil Made?
Before we get into the knitty-gritty, it’s important to understand the backstory of what goes into creating CBD oil in the first place. While the process can vary slightly, all types of CBD oil are extracted by applying pressure to the hemp (cannabis) plant. The best quality CBD oil companies use pressurized carbon dioxide to apply this pressure. As the cannabis plant comes into contact with pressurized carbon dioxide, the hairs (known as trichomes) on the plant burst open. Voila! Cannabinoids are released. Then, the CBD oil is refined leaving precious cannabinoids, terpenes, and other phytochemicals behind. Ultimately, cannabinoids are either added or removed from the oil before it is used to produce your favorite CBD products.
What’s Full Spectrum CBD Oil?
Upstate Mary is all about full spectrum! Why? Research suggests that full spectrum CBD may offer superior benefits compared to isolate and broad spectrum types, due to the synergistic action of cannabinoids.
Full Spectrum CBD boasts a robust cannabinoid profile, encompassing all therapeutic cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids present in hemp. Unlike other forms, full spectrum retains all cannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the psychoactive component of cannabis. The presence of THC in full spectrum CBD is less than 0.3%, which is not enough to produce psychoactive effects. This synergy among cannabinoids contributes to the “entourage effect,” enhancing its therapeutic potential. You’ll find full spectrum CBD in our collection of CBD lubes.
What’s Broad (or Wide) Spectrum CBD?
Broad spectrum CBD preserves the natural array of cannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp, excluding THC. The refining process involves removing THC completely, while retaining other beneficial compounds. This makes it a suitable option for individuals who want to experience the potential benefits of multiple cannabinoids and terpenes without consuming THC, whether due to personal preference or concerns about drug testing. While Broad Spectrum CBD can be beneficial, we believe full spectrum offers a more exceptional array of benefits to its consumer.
What About CBD Isolate?
CBD isolate represents the purest form of CBD, containing only the CBD cannabinoid without other hemp compounds. While isolate lacks the entourage effect associated with full spectrum CBD, it appeals to individuals seeking THC-free CBD products or precise dosing. However, research suggests that the therapeutic efficacy of isolate may not match that of full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD, due to the absence of synergistic interactions among cannabinoids.
In short, there are a few different types of CBD on the market now, but if you want to gain as many benefits as possible, research suggests that full spectrum CBD is your best choice. That’s why each of our CBD lubricants are infused with full spectrum CBD as well as all-natural, organic botanicals made to nurture your body while delivering comfort and pleasure.
