Last year, Forbes published a piece “Why Sustainability Eludes the Cannabis Industry,” citing public policy mistakes and market conditions that have led to polluted outcomes similar to the coal industry. In Colorado, for example, the weed industry accounts for 1.3 percent of the state’s total annual carbon emissions, according to the state’s Department of Public Health and Environment. “This is similar to emissions from coal mining and trash collection for the entire state,” TED reported. One of the biggest problems? Growing cannabis indoors, as it requires a ton of energy.
