Is Sex Good For Your Heart?

Is Sex Good For Your Heart? February is American Heart Month, and more specifically, Women’s Heart Week is February 1-7. Both observances were created to raise awareness and educate about serious heart diseases, their symptoms, and promote healthy habits for prevention. In fact, one in every five American deaths each year is related to heart disease–that’s about 695,000 deaths per year! Lifestyle choices play a big role in heart disease risk, and making smart decisions can lower your chances and maintain a healthy heart.  Not smoking, eating a balanced, plant-rich diet, and regular exercise are major heart disease preventers, but there’s a very exciting heart helper you’ll want to know about: sex!

Best news you’ve heard all day, right? According to Johns Hopkins Medical, studies show that men who have sex twice a week and women who report having satisfying sex lives are less likely to have a heart attack. Ah, a research report after our own heart.

Why Is Sex a Heart Helper?

  • Sex is a moderate form of exercise. It causes your heart to beat between 90 and 130 beats a minute, peaking at 145 to 170 beats a minute, which can help strengthen your cardiovascular health. A workout we would jump on board in a heartbeat! While it’s not quite the same as a treadmill session, getting your blood flowing is key to keeping your heart strong, and sex does just that.

  • Sex is a stress reliever! Because orgasms release endorphins and feel-good hormones, sex can lower your stress levels. Stress puts a lot of pressure on your heart, so keeping stress levels low is super important to preventing disease.

  • Sex improves your sleep. Sleep gives your heart and blood vessels the rest and recovery they need to thrive. When you sleep, your blood pressure drops, which lowers your risk of cardiovascular issues. Sex releases hormones that help you feel relaxed and sleepy, sending you into dreamland and improving your sleep quality.

  • Sex helps you feel more connected to others. Sex releases the “love hormone” oxytocin, which helps you feel that connection to your partner. Healthy, connected relationships put you at a lower risk for having a heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.

There you have it… sex could save your life. But if you aren’t jazzed to have sex due to pain, dryness, or discomfort, this is easier said than done. In our own experience with cancer, pain and other health issues, a CBD-infused lubricant has worked wonders. CBD can help increase blood flow, promote relaxation, reduce pain, and set the mood for your intimate moments.

Can CBD Help Your Heart?

The British Heart Foundation reported that inflammation is the root of many heart-related diseases, from heart disease to high blood pressure. Because there is evidence that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it could be helpful in keeping your heart working at its best. Other reports have shown that the increase in blood flow from CBD could be positive for the heart, but more research is needed for conclusive results.
